Based on a true story

Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, the Duchess of Montpensier, was a remarkable figure in the tumultuous era of the French civil war known as the Fronde. Born on May 29, 1627, she was the only daughter of Gaston d'Orléans and Marie de Bourbon. From a young age, she displayed a fierce spirit and a thirst for adventure that would shape her destiny.

As the third war of the Fronde engulfed France, Anne Marie found herself thrust into a position of leadership. In 1652, she took command of the troops that occupied Orléans, a strategic city caught in the midst of the conflict. With determination and courage, she skillfully guided her forces, earning the title of La Grande Mademoiselle.

On July 2, 1652, the Battle of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine unfolded. It was a crucial moment that could have spelled disaster for Prince Louis II de Bourbon's army. Sensing the impending danger, Anne Marie's strategic brilliance shone through. Against all odds, she made a daring decision that would save the prince's troops from annihilation.

With unwavering resolve, Anne Marie ordered the cannons of the Bastille to be turned against the royal troops. The thunderous roar of the cannons echoed through the streets, unleashing a hail of destruction upon the enemy forces. Her bold move changed the course of the battle, dealing a significant blow to the royal government and securing a crucial victory for the Frondeurs.

Amidst the chaos of war, love unexpectedly found its way into Anne Marie's heart. She fell deeply in love with Antoine Nompar de Caumont, Count de Lauzun, captain of King Louis XIV's bodyguard. Despite the challenges and restrictions imposed by societal norms and political alliances, their connection remained steadfast. Even though they were on opposite sides in the civil war, their romantic liaisons were frequent and intense.

In 1653, Anne Marie and Antoine decided to bind their fates together in a secret marriage. Their love flourished in the shadows, providing solace and strength amidst the chaos that surrounded them. Their union became a symbol of hope, a testament to the power of love that transcends barriers and defies conventions.

Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans, the Duchess of Montpensier, forever etched her name in history as a valiant warrior, a shrewd tactician, and a woman of unwavering determination. Her legacy, fueled by love and courage, would endure through the ages, a testament to the indomitable spirit of one remarkable woman in a time of great upheaval.

In this moment, global warming, war, self-centered politics, mass shootings…all pale and fade into the background as the only thing that matters is the sheer bliss radiating from the child.
